For those who want a compact tool
I bought this primarily for its compact size. Even in its case, I hardly know I am wearing it. I was using a Gerber Diesel before this one and although it is also a great tool, it felt too bulky on my belt. This tool has a simple but unique system with the pliers in that they fold into the handle instead of sliding in like the Gerber. This method allows for the pliers to be at a 90deg angle to the handle and still be able to be opened and closed. Unfortunately there is a flaw to this feature since the Paratool uses a basic mechanism to lock the pliers. The pliers can only be locked into place when they are fully extended for regular use. It requires a good amount of pressure to snap both joints on the handle. Unlike the Gerber, there is no buttons to keep the pliers in place; it requires the same amount of pressure to bend the handles and fold in the pliers. When I say “good amount of pressure”, I would assess that it may be a little too hard to use as a young boy scout. The tools on the handle operate with a similar locking system but require less pressure to close. The Diesel tools will lock into place and must be released with a button that you slide. This is a very study tool and when folded, the only thing exposed is the fixed lever that helps you bring out the pliers. I find the lack of mechanisms and its basic design a plus since there are less things that can be bent or broken. The strengths of the Paratool are:
>Like most other SOG tools, it is a solid piece of equipment
>It’s the most compact multi-tool I have ever used
Although I like the lack of moving parts, I think the locking system is the root of some known and possible problems:
>The angled pliers are unreliable since they can freely move
>Takes a bit of strength to open/close attachments
>>Although it takes some strength to close, it’s not a sure lock for when you really have to depend on an attachment (I personally haven’t had a problem)
If you’re new to multi-tools and want something more advertised and with a locking system, then a Gerber may be better for you. As a military guy, the simplicity and ruggedness in its compact size makes for a reliable combination.
