Great, but doesn’t last forever

I am perhaps among the few members of our species who loves to split wood. (If I could make a living at it, I’d be outside catchin’ those rays and be in better shape than I am!)

A regular splitting wedge is a good tool; and if you’re green and don’t want some power device to do it for you, a wedge will do the job. But you should have at least two wedges at your disposal. They get stuck in the wood, and they’re usually only good for one split.

The grenade is a bit more versatile. Rather than just a linear split, the device can weaken a log along more angles. That’s all I need to say, I guess, except that I’ve used up two in about six years. In both cases, after many a split, the tip broke off. The grenade is a little harder to find at the hardware store so I’m going to go one step up now with another grenade-like device here available from amazon.com.

But if you’re making a choice between a regular wedge and the grenade, I’d go with the grenade.
